Brokered Search: One-Stop Searching for the Enterprise
Overview
Open Text began development of its own Brokered Search product to provide customers that have multiple Livelink databases with the ability to search all of them from a single interface. There are two possible approaches that Open Text could have taken to this problem: the "harvesting" approach or the "brokering" approach.
Harvesting involves crawling and maintaining searchable indexes of the data sources to which you want your users to have access. Harvesting essentially requires that you host a copy of the data contained in the target data sources to provide your users with the ability to search the data from a single interface. Harvesting certainly has some clear benefits. In contrast, the brokering approach uses a "Search Broker" that works in much the same way as a real estate or insurance broker works. The end user or consumer deals with a single entity, the "broker". The broker then takes the consumer’s request, packages it appropriately, and contacts the source providers of the product or service on behalf of the consumer to obtain the best possible result. In the case of the Search Broker, it accepts the search query submitted by the end user, transforms it into a query language that is understood by the various target data sources, retrieves the best results from those data sources, normalizes the results, and then displays the combined results back to the end user.
