Are Passwords Passé? Fingers Point the Way
Overview Traditionally, passwords have provided security, but they have certain drawbacks. For instance, they are easily forgotten, especially if the user has to memorize several of them and use some of them only occasionally. Also, users often write them down, and they can be stolen by sharp-eyed pirates. Furthermore, the process of issuing passwords to individuals and deleting them when personnel circumstances change is an ongoing headache for administrators. Enter biometrics. Forget about what the dictionary says (the statistical analysis of biological data); in today's e-speak, biometrics means the precise measurement of some facet of a person's unique physical (or vocal) traits, digitizing that measurement, storing it in computer memory, and later comparing it against the same measurement when taken again later.
