Dynamic Thresholding
Overview Biometric technologies give systems deployers the ability to vary the level of security to maximize the efficiency of the system. By using a technique known as dynamic thresholding, one can set the verification threshold based upon factors such as transaction amount and customer profile. This is possible because biometric verification results in a score, not simply a yes/no. This is not possible with PINs or passwords, where the information entered is either absolutely correct or absolutely wrong. By setting a more strict threshold, the chances for a false accept increase and the chances for a false reject decrease (see Assessing System Performance, Part I analysis for introduction to FAR, FRR and thresholds). On a simple level, one can adjust the threshold of an entire system to achieve a system wide balance of false acceptances and false rejections. However, using dynamic thresholding it is possible to vary the threshold for each transaction based upon certain risk factors.
