Start-Up Costs vs. Organization Costs
Overview Start-up costs are sometimes confused with organization costs. Start-up costs relate to the beginning operations of a new business, whereas organization costs relate to the establishment of the business’s existence. You should present both types of costs separately on the balance sheet and amortize them, although you can amortize them over different periods of time. Start-up costs and organization costs are valid concepts for both financial (GAAP) and tax (IRS) reporting.
