Wireless Data over Cellular and PCS

Overview Terrestrial commercial mobile data is a comparatively recent development. The first systems were installed for public safety in the late 70’s. In the early 80’s, IBM and Federal Express embraced the technology to re-engineer their field operations. These systems used fully customized applications, radio networks, and data terminals - remember there were no PC’s, no cellular systems and no TCP/IP protocols. Hence they were useable only to corporations or agencies who could afford the capital investment and support costs of running a proprietary network.

By the mid eighties the industry began to look for ways to expand service to cover the white collar user who had become accustomed to the facility of mobile voice provided by cellular systems. The IBM Field Service system evolved into ARDIS in the late 80’s, while about the same time the Swedish PT&T with Ericsson installed a system in the port of Gothenburg. These systems were to evolve to today’s ARDIS and RAM systems respectively.

In the meantime, users who really wanted to move data in a mobile environment developed methods of connecting their conventional wireline modems to their cellular phones, with mixed results. As engineering effort was applied to this ground-swell of demand, a fairly reliable service capable of offering data at 9,600 bps grew. It remains by far the largest segment of terrestrial mobile data.
