DDS-3 and DDS-2 DAT Tape Drives: DDS-3 DAT Tape Storage System

Overview DDS-3 triples the capacity and doubles the speed of current DDS-2 products. The new DDS-3 drive has a native storage capacity of up to 12 Gbytes and a compressed capacity of up to 24 Gbytes. With a transfer rate of up to 2,200 Kbytes per second, the STD224000N is fully backward-compatible with DDS-2, DDS-DC and DDS media. The high-storage capability of DDS-3, coupled with a fast transfer rate, positions DDS-3 as a scaleable backup technology, spanning the performance workstations to enterprise network servers.

Seagate's DDS-3 drive includes several innovations, including the use of a PRML (partial response maximum likelihood) data channel that offers higher data density per inch, and a self-cleaning device inside the drive that reduces end-user maintenance by the use of an innovative cleaning mechanism and activation algorithms.

The linear density of DDS-3 media is twice that of DDS-2 media, which enables increased storage capability. Dual-coated DDS-3 media provides an extremely thin magnetic layer that greatly improves overwrite and distortion performance. DDS-3 media is the most durable DAT media available, using a ceramic layer that provides strength and protects each magnetic particle from oxidation.
