RAID White Papers

The Key Role that VERITAS Foundation Technologies Can Play in Implementing Robust E-business Data Management Solutions

Overview E-business applications are typically I/O request intensive, meaning that they make large numbers of randomly addressed I/O requests per second, but only ask for a few kilobytes of data per I/O request. Small random access I/O requests make accessing data (get to the right spot on the right disk) more important to performance than transferring data rapidly.

RAID keeps data available when a disk fails. RAID arrays must also restore redundancy quickly so that a second disk failure doesn’t cause data loss. VERITAS volume manager hot relocation allows a storage administrator to designate dedicated spares. When a data disk fails, the volume manager automatically allocates a spare and rebuilds the failed disk’s contents without human intervention.
