A Comparative Analysis of High-Speed Switching for Backbone LANs: Fast Ethernet, FDDI, and Fibre Channel
Overview LAN switching has proven its value in boosting available bandwidth while protecting investments in cabling and network interface cards (NICs). Backbone LAN switching poses some special requirements compared with departmental LAN switching. Network managers should choose a backbone switching technology based on how it handles different kinds of traffic, how fast it is, how well it performs under real-world conditions, how well it can be integrated with current infrastructures and accommodated by current budgets, and how well it can meet future requirements. The four leading contenders are ATM, Switched Fast Ethernet, Switched FDDI, and Fibre Channel. While each has strengths, Fibre Channel offers superior capabilities in the demanding environment of the enterprise backbone LAN.
