Recycling to Achieve Results
Overview For the most part, we are in the habit of recycling for the environment. Now we must think about recycling to achieve results in the workplace. The need for rapid knowledge change and acquisition demands that we trainers shorten product release cycles. To help us do this we are looking to reuse content, media, instructional strategies, and logic structures, to name a few. As in the infancy of any idea or initiative, we are learning ways to accomplish this task. The buzz words¾enterprise, reusability, metadata tagging, architecture of information, knowledge management, EPSS, learning objects, object-oriented tools and templates are all part of this recycling effort. Let’s take a brief look at one small component of this new accepted wisdom that is getting serious recognition for reusability—templates. Templates are repeatable logic structures, design expertise, and media elements captured in a reusable form. They are a convenient way to achieve consistent results as they are constructed only once in an authoring tool. Templates are ideal in helping you achieve cost-benefit results if you are planning to develop training on a large-scale. It is just common sense. The larger the project the greater the ROI with templates. There are reports of reducing development time by 80% within a custom courseware development environment.
