Overview The telecommunications business has grown rapidly over the last ten years. So much, so that it has placed enormous demands on the basic transmission systems that get signals from A to B. Several companies have risen to the challenge and stated that they will 'wire the world'. However, there is a lot more to this than simply putting lots of fibre in the ground. This paper examines some of the practical issues in building a reliable transport network and in keeping it going.
