Understanding the IPSec Protocol Suite
Overview The Internet Protocol (IP) underlies the vast majority of large corporate and academic networks as well as the Internet. It is flexible, powerful, and has served people's networking needs well for decades. IP's strength lies in its easily and flexibly routed packets - the small, manageable chunks into which it breaks the data stream for transmission through the network. Because these vulnerabilities limit and complicate the use of large IP networks (including the Internet) for sensitive communications, an international group organized under the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) has developed the IP Security (IPSec) protocol suite, a set of IP extensions that provide security services at the network level. IPSec technology is based on modern cryptographic technologies, making possible very strong data authentication and privacy guarantees.
