Unified Camera, Content and Talent Tracking in Digital Television and Movie Production

Overview Over the past several years, various camera tracking solutions have been fielded for electronic cinematography and virtual set production. These solutions, in general, have incorporated either a mechanically encoded or optically tracked device to give proper orientation of a camera, on-set and in real-time, for use in broadcast or post-produced virtual set productions. While the application of these systems is not wide-spread, their success has come at a very high entry cost for both the hardware and technical support needed to use the technology. Importantly, there have been no universal tools to help bridge the film and video gap and ultimately provide a unified film/video solution for camera tracking. This paper addresses the main obstacles perceived with implementing virtual set technology in digital studio production and presents a camera tracking and lens encoding approach which eliminates these obstacles.
