What is IrDA Lite and When Can It Be Used?
Overview This paper gives a brief overview of IrDA Lite and describes situations in which IrDA Lite can be used in place of a full-featured IrDA implementation. The IrDA Lite specification describes how to create a "minimal" compatible IrDA implementation. Not all devices can live with minimal IrDA Lite capabilities but adding support for values beyond the minimum IrLAP parameters, such as higher speeds and larger data sizes can be done with reasonably small increases in RAM and ROM size. We refer to such an implementation as "extended". The major strategies that make IrDA Lite "IrDA Lite" are using IrLAP disconnect instead of IrLMP disconnect and exposing control of IrLAP to the application. These strategies have the greatest impact on ROM size but also create IrDA Lite’s most significant deficiency in capabilities. That is, IrDA Lite cannot easily support multiple applications running at the same time. However, the number of scenarios in which multiple applications need to run at the same time is small. Therefore, IrDA Lite (minimal or extended) will work for most implementations.
