Testing and Analyzing Next Generation Networks

Overview Networks and distributed systems are beginning to support new multimedia business applications but this convergence creates new challenges for network providers. Telephony over the Internet, Web data over wireless telephones and video streaming are just a few examples of how convergence can be exploited. The result is a next generation of networks that are more technically complex, harder to manage and are far less predictable. In fact, even today's "best efforts" Internet approach becomes more complicated when the various qualities of service need to be guaranteed. Perhaps most significant, however, is the growing business dependency on distributed applications and network processing, both of which depend on all the components working correctly and effectively together. Testing and analyzing the operation of the network on an end-to-end basis is more necessary today than ever before. Data must be collected to measure performance, to provide billing information and to track network usage, all of which are also closely related to testing. This Technology Guide introduces the requirements for testing of next generation networks and shows how monitoring and analyzing converged networks can become quite a complex endeavor. It also examines how network testing is evolving in general and describes the essential elements of a complete testing solution. Finally, the benefits of network monitoring and analysis to the service provider are described.
