The Architectural Evolution: An Open Systems White Paper
Overview In most organizations, the information technologies (IT) or information systems (IS) organization is considered a necessary part of the infrastructure. Accounting, billing, personnel, payroll, and general administration make up the IT function. IT is just a cost center that supports the operational profit centers of manufacturing, sales, distribution, and services. If business is going to respond to the changing needs of today's volatile markets, business managers must change the way they view their information technologies. IT must become a strategic weapon system, rather than just a necessary part of the infrastructure. Information technologies are not a panacea for today's challenging business environments. Computers are just another business tool, no different from a telephone system, copier, automated manufacturing line, or specialized fleet of delivery vehicles. As such, there are a limited number of things that a computer system can do for a business. However, through innovation and imagination, the information that computer systems can provide has the potential to dramatically change a corporation's ability to compete in the market and provide the ability to find new paths to customers with new products and services.
