Local Area Networks (LAN) White Papers

Service Gateway Strategy

Overview The home service gateway (HSG) is IBM's vision of an intelligent "Home Network Hub". The HSG is a service platform designed to bridge external data networks to internal home networks and to enable customers to receive a whole new class of home services. For the first time in history, the technology is now available to offer broadband data networks in the home without requiring new wires. The HSG can be defined as a device that combines a thin server architecture with traditional router/hub functions acting as the intersection between wide area networks (WANs) and local area networks (LANs). In this period of deregulation and intensifying competition for customer loyalty, service providers are aggressively trying to improve their value proposition to consumers. As service providers add services to improve the consumer value proposition, the current infrastructure begins to demonstrate its limitations. The consumer is required to pay for additional access lines and has highly restricted mobility for those services which require access at natural points of need.
