ATM Testing: Beyond the Cell Level

Overview WP-29/95, ATM Testing ATM separates the physical layer from the cell-relay mechanism and upper layers. The ATM Forum has defined many different physical interfaces for ATM, supporting a variety of speeds (from 1.5 Mbps up to 25, 43 and 155 Mbps), and carrying media (optical fibers, coaxial cable and twisted-pair). Many types of ATM equipment offer several different ports on the same machine. Such equipment encourages migration to ATM by allowing users to keep their existing wiring and choose the appropriate interface for specific applications. In short, an ATM protocol analyzer must go beyond the cell level. Due to today’s varied communications environment, the appropriate analyzer must be capable of testing higher-layer protocols as well as operating on a variety of physical media. This, in turn, will enable developers to verify that their products operate in a range of environments, and allow users to easily integrate ATM into their existing networks.
