Category 6 White Paper
Overview Category 6 draft standards exist today, in both domestic and international standards bodies. Category 6 performance means a UTP link with a useful bandwidth of at least 200 MHz. Category 6 cables and components are already available on the market, for a price premium of 25-75% over good quality Category 5. The Category 6 market is expected to grow from 10% premise wiring market share in 1998 to over 52% five years from now. Installation practices are crucial to maintaining Category 6 performance, and links must be tested to 250 MHz to be properly qualified. In addition to increased bandwidth, several new measurements such as PSELFEXT, (which cannot be accurately performed by previous generation field testers) must be performed. At this time only the Microtest OMNIScanner has the necessary bandwidth, dynamic range, and measurement capability to fully support Category 6 field measurements.
