Achieving Successful SAN Installations Rapidly

Overview Today, SANs, hyped for years, are finally being installed and are running successfully; however, some SAN installations remain very painful and, while the risk-reward ratio is probably sound, most IS directors do not want undue pain. Since SANs are new, the inside scoop on the elements of installation risk and how to minimize them are not widely known. SANs offer the benefits of shared storage among systems and devices, independent scaling of servers and storage capabilities, high performance, faster and easier system deployment and lower total cost of acquisition, administration, and support. IS environments have an enormous dependence on and investment in SCSI storage, whether it be disk arrays, tape libraries, or even optical jukeboxes. Here, bridging of SCSI protocol to Fibre Channel and vice versa becomes very critical to bringing SCSI storage into the SAN while still achieving the targeted benefits of Fibre Channel.
