True On-Line versus On-Line Technology: the Truth About UPS Topologies
Overview Increasingly, contemporary electronic loads are more tolerant to wide, long-duration variations in supply voltage, as well as the typical spikes and transients inherent in the electrical "source" or facility distribution system. Power supplies in most computer equipment manufactured today will accept voltage deviations of + 20% for a long duration, and some can run continuously. A total interruption service typical of normal building operation -- or a minimum of one cycle of 60 hertz power and up to 800V narrow impulses -- generally can be tolerated without damage or interference with normal operation of the critical load. The critical load, however, may not operate as reliably over its intended useful life as equipment operated in a more stable environment, i.e., one that is electrical, thermal and dust/dirt free.
