Overview The enterprise application development world is changing fast. Very few people could have predicted the massive changes that have occurred over the past 5 years in the business environment and technical landscape. In particular, the importance of the Internet and its related technologies has taken everyone by surprise. As a result of these changes, end users of enterprise-scale information systems have significantly different expectations about their flexibility, availability, and usability. These translate in to a whole new set of demands on IT departments and their supporting technologies. Many organizations have spent a great deal of time and effort over the past few years to purchase, install, and deploy packaged applications. The most obvious examples of this are the range of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) packages from SAP, Baan, and PeopleSoft.
