Heterogeneous Multicomputing for Cost-Effective Embedded Systems Backgrounder

Overview Heterogeneous multicomputing is an advanced parallel processing technique that significantly reduces the cost of embedded computing by allowing more than one kind of processor type to be used in a multiprocessor computing system. System designers can now choose the most efficient, cost effective chip for the type of processing performed by each stage of a particular application. Three processor types in a heterogeneous multicomputing system are: programmable digital signal processing (DSP) chips, specialized processing chips, and general purpose microprocessor units (MPUs). Maximum throughput with minimum configuration size and minimum system cost is achieved by matching the processor type to the processing requirement.
