Interrupt Primer
Overview All interrupts (except overflow interrupts) passed by SBS PCI-to-VMEbus adapters are device interrupts (hardware level). Interrupts to be passed are selected by setting jumpers on the VMEbus adapter card. When an interrupt occurs, it is transmitted directly to the other bus. A VMEbus interrupt, for example, is transmitted directly to the PCI bus where it appears as a PCI interrupt. Although all interrupts are device interrupts, they can by categorized by the root cause of the interrupt -- either between a piece of software and hardware, or between two pieces of software with the adapter passing the communication. Error interrupts and IACK interrupts are communications between software and hardware. Programmed interrupts are communications between two pieces of software. The overflow interrupt, generated by the SBS device driver, is between the device driver and the application software.
