Evolving Cellular Handset Architectures But a Continuing, Insatiable Desire for DSP MIPS
Overview Cellular telephony is one of the largest, fastest growing markets in the high-tech marketplace. In the last two years, the worldwide consumption of cellular handsets has tripled from 48M units in 1996 to 153M units in 1998. Cellular penetration has experienced a compounded growth rate of approximately 60%–70%. This paper gives a short tutorial background on cellular standards, describing the current evolution of second to third generation systems, and discusses how handset architectures, in general, and digital signal processor (DSP) technology, in particular, must evolve to meet the needs of these future systems.
