Overview Tcpdump is a free sniffer developed first by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and now is maintained by a consortium. It is most commonly used to capture ethernet packets in a common format that many analysis tools can read. It is the basis for many Intrusion Detection Software applications.
