Overview This paper describes the cryptographic concepts of symmetric-key encryption, public-key encryption, hash algorithms, digital signatures, and key exchange. A public key infrastructure (PKI) encompasses the techniques and standards used to manage certificates and public and private keys in order to authenticate the validity of each party involved in an electronic transaction. This paper explains the PKI concepts of certificate, certification authority, rooted CA hierarchies, registration, certificate enrollment, certificate revocation, and certificate chain validation.
