RISC-Based Servers White Papers
How Important is Reliability in a Total Cost of Ownership Analysis of Clusters?
Overview Clusters often serve as the heart of an organization's computing environment. Despite this strategic role, few detailed studies have been conducted regarding the Total Cost of Ownership (or TCO) of these systems. This white paper provides a robust analysis of the three year TCO for four different midrange RISC-based clusters. Midrange server clusters from Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and Sun Microsystems were compared in terms of their acquisition, installation, training, configuration, management, and maintenance costs. In addition to these costs, this paper also compares the reliability of these four cluster systems. Results indicate major differences between the four manufacturers in the area of TCO. Compaq AlphaServers running OpenVMS have the lowest overall TCO.
