A Store as Big as the World

Overview The marketplace of the 21st century-an interactive one, or a "cyber-market" or even a "perfect marketplace"-is about time and space, and this is its fundamental difference. From the manufacturer to the final consumer, the cyber-market has defined a new concept. For the first time, the market itself is bigger than the marketplace. Indeed, in many respects, there remains no such thing as place. It is a thousand, a million, eventually a billion points of entry and exit, production and consumption. Above all, it is a market of multiple, indeed infinite points of contact. The only way to capitalize on such points of contact is for the manufacturer and the retailer to be at once everywhere and nowhere - to know, to understand deeply second by second what the customer wants and what the manufacturer can produce to satisfy these desires. Above all, it means the end of the bricks-and-mortar retailer for the majority of retailing transactions.
