Data Migration (DM) Factory... The DM Solution?

Overview This paper introduces the DM Factory, which is a metaphor representing a comprehensive solution to all aspects of the challenging problem of data migration. The DM Factory integrates job functions, a methodology, and tools. The personnel performing the data migration are organized and operate in much the same way a typical factory operates. The input into the DM Factory is raw, unprocessed data and the output is high quality, clean, converted data ready for production installation. A properly organized and operated DM Factory eliminates much of the risk of massive cost overruns and schedule delays by dramatically reducing the multiple iterations that usually occur when moving data from one system to another. Businesses can reduce their risk by essentially automating the process of understanding both the source and target data and the underlying business rules prior to developing the detailed migration instructions. The DM Factory, because of its procedures and tools, enables management of the data migration by providing automated scheduling and capacity planning. State-of-the art tools enable integrated online data analysis, mapping of source to target, and storage of precise migration/conversion instructions. These instructions are stored in a central repository called Online Analyst (OA) developed by CMSI. OA allows export of the instructions into any one of the many data movement tools on the market. OA also provides a wide variety of management reports to enable work-in-process (WIP) tracking and assurance that all data have been addressed.
