The Structure of Intrusion and Intrusion Detection
Overview In this paper, we examine the structure of intrusion and intrusion detection and discuss the issues surrounding effective intrusion detection and its limits. The concepts and, perhaps, even the particulars in this paper are not new, and should not be surprising to the knowledgeable reader. Rather, they represent a roll-up and organization of the way in which we do and think about intrusion detection and the limitations that exist now and likely will continue to exist over time with intrusion detection as a protection technology. If there is a contribution in this paper it is in the structuring of the intrusion detection problem and its placement in context. The basic outline of the paper goes along with the basic structure of intrusion detection.
