The Times, Are They Changing? The New Service Provider Reality

Overview Service provider markets have never seen such turbulence. For decades, service providers operated with proven technologies in benign regulatory environments and stable markets. The industry has seen some change over the years, but the rise of the Internet and the Telecom Act in the 1990s wildly accelerated it. Now service providers confront unprecedented change on practically every front. Subscriber markets, once so thoroughly dominated by providers, have not responded to new services offered as service providers anticipated. New regulation, revolutionary technology and maturation of traditional markets have altered competitive dynamics forever.

This white paper summarizes our findings from three segments that contributed significant information, namely the CLECs, MSOs and wireless carriers. Just as prosperity and ebullient financial markets once encouraged innovation and risk taking, economic downturn and uncertain financial markets have turned many service providers cynical and risk-averse. In reaction, major industry segments are rapidly consolidating. Yet our discussions with service providers point to a way out of this cycle and to long-term recovery.
