MIME - Technical Overview

Overview The Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) standard is a set of specifications that allow message contents in different data formats to be transported via various transports, including electronic mail or e-mail and HTTP. MIME also allows for an extensible set of different formats for non textual message bodies, multi-part message bodies, and textual header information in character sets other than US-ASCII. It was designed to cope with many of the most bizarre variations of SMTP, UUCP, and other Procrustean mail transport protocols that like to slice, dice, and stretch the headers and bodies of e-mail messages. This document presents an introduction to the technical issues behind MIME and its use in Internet Electronic Mail.
