Internet Processor II ASIC: Rate-Limiting and Traffic-Policing Features

Overview This paper describes how rate-limiting tools are implemented in the Juniper Networks, Inc. M-series Internet backbone routers and supported by JUNOS Internet software and the Internet Processor II ASIC. It provides a general introduction to rate-limiting mechanisms and describes how service providers can use these tools to support the delivery of tiered services while enhancing the performance and stability of their networks. This paper focuses on the specific design objectives, operational model, and configuration examples of rate limiting supported by JUNOS software and the Internet Processor II ASIC. Because these mechanisms are closely related to and interact with class of service (CoS) features, this paper assumes that the reader has a general understanding of CoS concepts and how they are supported by the M-series routers.
